Calif. dentist aims to end illiteracy in his city

A Northern California dentist is working to end adult illiteracy in his city in honor of his late father, according to an article in the Mercury News.

Continuing a program he began last year, Barry Parish, D.D.S., who practices in Benicia, is offering half-price teeth-whitening services with the help of Henry Schein, which donated 40 whitening kits. Dr. Parish's goal is to raise $10,000 to benefit the Benicia Public Library's English as a second language and adult literacy programs.

During the Great Depression, Dr. Parish's father, Odes Parish, was pulled from school in the fourth grade, and he struggled with illiteracy as an adult until he began taking adult education classes, according to the story. Dr. Parish wants to provide the same opportunity to others by supporting the library's literacy programs, which currently serves about 125 adults.

Last year he donated more than $7,000 and has already raised nearly $1,800 this year.
