A daytime at-home bleaching system consisting of 28% carbamide peroxide (CP) gel exhibited significant bleaching effects in a new study, but overnight bleaching with a 10% CP gel still resulted in a higher bleaching effectiveness (Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, April 2010, Vol. 22:2, pp. 139-146).
Researchers at Ege University in Turkey wanted to compare the clinical efficacy and side effects of a new daytime at-home bleaching technique (Meta Tray, Remedent) with the overnight application of CP.
They assigned 20 patients to one of two sample groups of 10. The participants either used the Meta Tray daytime bleaching system with a non-custom-fit tray for 20 minutes or a conventional overnight at-home bleaching system with a custom-fit tray (Opalescence PF, Ultradent) for 6 to 8 hours.
Among the study findings:
- The bleaching effectiveness of Opalescence PF was found to be superior to that of Meta Tray.
- Meta Tray provoked less tooth sensitivity, although gingival sensitivity appeared higher.
- The whitening effect remained similar one year after treatment for both bleaching systems.
"Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the new daytime at-home bleaching system tested (Meta Tray) produced significant bleaching effects," the authors concluded. "However, the clinical efficacy of the overnight bleaching system was found to be superior to the daytime at-home bleaching system evaluated in this study."
