Procter & Gamble has followed GlaxoSmithKline's lead by adding a caution on its Web site regarding the potential health risks posed by excessive exposure to zinc in Fixodent denture cream.
Faced with dozens of lawsuits filed by consumers claiming they were harmed by Super PoliGrip and other denture adhesives that contain zinc, GlaxoSmithKline last month announced that it will stop manufacturing these products and replace them with zinc-free alternatives.
Now, in addition to informing consumers that Fixodent contains 4% zinc, the new language on the Procter & Gamble Web site dentureliving.com states: "Some reports suggest that excessive and prolonged zinc intake may be linked to adverse health effects."
"While any new caution regarding Fixodent is a step in the right direction, it does not go nearly far enough," said Andres Alonso, a partner of law firm Parker Waichman Alonso, which has filed numerous lawsuits on behalf of denture wearers who say they were harmed by zinc-containing denture adhesives. "Procter & Gamble's attempt to do this quietly will leave too many consumers unaware of the danger that Fixodent could pose to their health. As long as these products continue to be sold, they remain a serious public health threat."
