GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is recalling Poligrip denture creams that contain zinc from the Japanese market, according to news reports.
Concerns about toxicity from the zinc in the products have arisen recently, and the company has ceased manufacture of the products.
GlaxoSmithKline spokesperson Malesia Dunn said her company recalled the products from retail outlets in Japan at the request of regulatory agencies there. It has not recalled the products anywhere else in the world.
Several people who used Poligrip in the U.S. have sued GlaxoSmithKline, alleging that they were harmed by ingesting excessive amounts of zinc. Similar lawsuits have been filed against Procter & Gamble, which makes a competing zinc-containing cream. While an essential nutrient, zinc can cause such problems as neuropathy when ingested in excess.
GlaxoSmithKline maintains that the products are safe when used as directed, but that some users apply excessive amounts of the cream.
In the U.S., the products include Super PoliGrip Original, Super PoliGrip Ultra Fresh, and Super PoliGrip Extra Care.
