Buyer's Guide Update: Bleaching products and lamps

Dear Buyer's Guide Update Member,

Teeth whitening has become an increasingly competitive business for dental professionals, given the growing number of mall-based kiosks, over-the-counter consumer-based products, and Internet ads touting low-cost (but not always high-quality) whitening systems.

So what's a dentist to do? A good first step can be learning more about how the key ingredients in each of these products work so you can explain the pros and cons to your patients.

At the recent Yankee Dental Congress, Dorothy Vannah, R.D.H., of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine warned that overeager patients can damage their gums, wind up with searing pain, and even turn their teeth translucent by overusing home-based teeth-whitening systems. She recommends learning everything you can about the type and concentration of the active ingredients in these products to help your patients achieve the bright smile they aspire to while minimizing tooth sensitivity.

You can also use the DrBicuspid.com Buyer's Guide to do some comparison shopping and help your patients better understand their options when it comes to both home-based and in-office bleaching. There are dozens of teeth-whitening products, bleaching lamps, and accelerators listed in the Buyer's Guide.
