Cosmetic dentistry's future looks shiny

America's increasing desire for Hollywood-perfect looks means that cosmetic and implant procedures will grow 15% in the next few years, the Millennium Research Group (MRG) predicts. By contrast, noncosmetic procedures will only grow by 5%, the marketing research group said.

It projected that implant procedures alone will grow at more than 18% annually from 2008 to 2011. Besides a growing desire for bright smiles, the key driving forces behind this trend are improvements in implant devises and an increasing number of general dentists offering them, according to MRG.

"Facial aesthetic procedures will grow more than 15% over the next five years," said Jaya Classen, senior analyst at MRG, in a press release promoting the company's "U.S. Surgical Procedure Volumes 2008" report. "While noncosmetic procedures are typically limited to those that are afflicted with a disease or infirmity, cosmetic procedures face no such demographic barriers to growth -- the number of people seeking to improve their looks seems endless."
