A Canadian researcher has developed a screening tool to assist a variety of professionals in assessing the risk of tooth decay in children younger than 6 years.
Created by Dr. Bob Schroth of the University of Manitoba, the Canadian Caries Risk Assessment Tool was developed for use by doctors, daycare workers, dietitians, and social workers, according to the university. It can also be utilized by dentists who might not have many pediatric patients.
The tool includes a series of questions for the child's parents that focus on factors that cause cavities. Points are given for each yes and no answer, and the point total determines if the child has a high or low caries risk status.
If the child's risk is high, the professional is then urged to refer the child to a dentist for treatment and fluoride varnish, according to the university. Additional recommendations for the parents are also provided.
The Canadian Caries Risk Assessment Tool is available in English or French.
