IADR/AADR publish implant dentistry supplement

The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have released the third clinical supplement to the Journal of Dental Research (JDR)

Clinical implant dentistry is the focus of the latest clinical supplement, the second in 2013, which will serve as a companion to the December issue of the journal.

The peer-reviewed supplement is dedicated to clinical research in implant dentistry and includes studies representing different trial designs, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs), case-control studies, prospective case series, and systematic reviews.

The RCTs have addressed important questions on patient-centered outcomes, the effect of immediate load on biological markers, and the influence of abutment-implant connections on crestal bone changes. A case-control study evaluates cost-effectiveness of anterior implants versus fixed dental prosthesis.

Two prospective case series published in the supplement describe early implant placement with contour augmentation and 3D evaluations of ridge alterations after tooth extraction. Finally, systematic reviews assess the outcome of dental implants installed in irradiated jaws, with another assessing outcomes of reconstructive procedures in treatment of peri-implantitis.

Tord Berglundh, DDS, PhD, from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, was a guest editor of the supplement.
