3M ESPE's Filtek shows good wearability in 5-year study

A five-year clinical study performed by 3M ESPE on occlusal contact wear found no statistically significant difference between Filtek Supreme universal restorative and enamel, demonstrating the material's high strength, the company announced.

Photographic evidence and optical analyses show that Filtek Supreme universal restorative retains a smoother finish and higher gloss than most restoratives, according to 3M ESPE. The company attributed this performance to the material's unique nanoclusters -- clusters of nanometer-sized particles that shear at a rate similar to the wear of the surrounding matrix during abrasion, allowing the restoration to maintain a smoother surface for long-term polish retention.

The Dental Advisor recently gave a 94% rating to the Filtek Supreme Plus restorative for its clinical performance at five years, the company noted. Consultants rated the material's fracture resistance, aesthetics, resistance to marginal discoloration, and wear resistance, with a vast majority ranking the product "excellent" in all fields.
