The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), along with 250 health organizations, has signed a letter supporting the safety and benefits of community water fluoridation.
This comes in response to U.S. Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s plans to direct federal agencies to stop recommending fluoridated water. The AAPD and others are concerned this reversal could harm the oral and overall health of both children and adults.
Similar to the Academy of General Dentistry's response, the AAPD emphasize that fluoridated water is a safe, effective, and equitable way to prevent cavities, especially for those at higher risk and with fewer resources. The AAPD remains committed to its use and supports ongoing research to ensure optimal fluoride levels, according to the letter.
