The Northern California town of Healdsburg will continue to fluoridate its public water supply after voters approved a ballot measure. More than 66% of voters approved Measure P, with 33.8% opposed, as of November 5.
The California Dental Association spent more than $45,000 to convince Healdsburg voters to continue fluoridation, while fluoride opponents spent less than $3,000, according to a pressdemocrat.com story.
The Sonoma County town, located about 70 miles north of San Francisco, has been fluoridating its water for more than 60 years.
The contest over the measure was anticipated to be a preview of a larger battle over whether the local water agency fluoridates its water supply to more than 600,000 customers, including cities in Sonoma County and nearby Marin County. Sonoma County officials are studying the issue, which will be up to the Board of Supervisors to decide.
