Hawaii girl dies after dental procedure

A 3-year-old Hawaiian girl who suffered massive brain damage after undergoing a dental procedure last month has died.

Finley Boyle died January 3 after falling into a coma nearly a month earlier, according to a foxnews.com story.

Her parents have filed a lawsuit alleging negligence and dangerous conduct against Lilly Geyer, DMD; Island Dentistry for Children; and unidentified staff members, claiming that the girl was not monitored during a December 3 visit to have four root canals performed at Dr. Geyer's practice.

The parents say the girl was given high doses of Demerol, hydroxyzine, and chloral hydrate, as well as nitrous oxide.

Records show that the child's oxygen levels weren't monitored for 26 minutes -- instead of every five minutes -- after she was administered Demerol, hydroxyzine, chloral hydrate, and nitrous oxide by a technician, according to attorney Rick Fried. The monitoring schedule allegedly led to the child's severe brain damage. The girl's father said an MRI showed that the girl suffered a lack of oxygen for at least five minutes.

The girl's mother, Ashley Boyle, said that nobody in the office administered CPR when her daughter went into cardiac arrest and that a doctor from another office had to be brought in.
