The University of Iowa Department of Pediatric Dentistry has received a $15,000 Philips Sonicare grant from the National Children's Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) for community outreach and dental care programs.
Cathy Skotowski, RDH, MS, a clinical assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, and Gayle Gilbaugh, a specialized care coordinator, are the lead investigators with the project.
The women are now two-time recipients after earning their first grant in 2011, according to an article in the Daily Iowan. The grant will bolster the five programs in place: participation in hearth fairs, a partnership with Proteus at migrant summer camps, an infant oral health clinic, and a Head Start collaboration.
It will also be used to purchase health screening supplies, fluoride varnish, in-home oral care products, and educational materials. The lion's share of the grant will help fund the University of Iowa Dental Care Program, and is coordinated by Gilbaugh. The program serves uninsured and underinsured kids in households earning less than 200% of the U.S. Federal Register's Poverty Guideline, the article noted.
