J. Daniel Subtelny, DDS, who had an esteemed 60-year career as an orthodontist with expertise in craniofacial treatment and an educator, has died.
Dr. Subtelny died in September at the age of 92, according to a recent ADA announcement.
Dr. Subtelny was a chairman and faculty member at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Eastman Institute for Oral Health in New York, according to a school announcement.
He was known for the "Hot Seat," a series of stressful classes where residents took direct questions from Dr. Subtelny for hours about every aspect of orthodontics, the school noted.
Dr. Subtelny lectured on six continents, trained hundreds of orthodontic graduate students, published 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers, several book chapters, and wrote a text book titled, Early Orthodontic Treatment.
He served on many editorial review boards including the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, the Journal of the Angle Orthodontist, and the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal.
Dr. Subtelny received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry and received his orthodontic certificate and Master of Science from the University of Illinois.
URMC recognized his achievements by establishing scholarships and professorships in his name.
A memorial service and private burial were held in late September.
