How many opioids should you prescribe following dental surgery? It depends on the procedure, according to a panel of dental experts from Johns Hopkins University. They recently published new prescribing guidelines for 14 types of dental procedures. See their recommendations in our Insider Exclusive.
The guidelines weren't the only big opioid news this month. Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that adolescents and young adults who fill an opioid prescription for wisdom teeth extractions are more than twice as likely to continue filling opioid prescriptions weeks or months later. In other Anesthesia & Pain Management Community news, researchers from the U.K. conducted a comprehensive review to see if one injectable anesthetic worked better than others in different clinical situations. All of the injectable anesthetics in the included studies appeared effective and safe, but one stood out for surgical procedures. Read more here.
Finally, better relief for acute pain using fewer opioids may be on the horizon thanks to new research into a chemical compound that targets multiple pain receptors. Researchers found that the addition of one type of protein provided better pain relief at a lower morphine dose in rodents. Learn more here.
