A new white paper urges surgical management of third molars that are diseased or at high risk of disease.
The white paper from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) recommends that "third-molar teeth that are associated with disease, or are at high risk of developing disease, should be surgically managed."
The guidelines also note that clinical and radiographic surveillance is indicated for third molars without disease or a significant risk of disease.
Eleven dental specialty groups, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Association of Periodontology, and others, have voiced support for the guidelines.
