Week in Review: Toothbrushing and toothbrushes | Periodontitis issues | Excellence Awards

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Millennials aren't so great at brushing their teeth, even when they're asked to brush to the best of their ability. That's the finding of a new study that evaluated the toothbrushing habits of young adults. Read more here.

We also reported on a study that examined the relationship between toothbrush wear and plaque scores. Researchers recommended throwing out the practice of equating toothbrush wear with toothbrush age. Learn more here.

This week also saw some important news about the impact of periodontitis on overall health. Scientists may have discovered a link between periodontal disease and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. A new study found chronic periodontal infection was associated with brain inflammation and neurodegeneration in mice. Find out more here.

Also focusing on periodontitis, in his latest column, Dr. Alvin Danenberg investigates if there is a causal relationship between the chronic inflammation of gum disease and the chronic inflammation of metabolic syndrome. Read more here.

More and more evidence points to the damaging effect periodontal disease has systemically. Without taking any funding away from current research, it seems like its long-past time for an organized, evidence-based, practical effort targeting periodontal disease.

Finally this week, we know there are a lot of awards in dentistry. What makes the DrBicuspid Dental Excellence Awards different is that we focus only on new products and services. With less than two weeks to go in the voting, hundreds of your colleagues have already cast their ballot. Now it's your turn to vote. Start the voting process here.
