Week in Review: Ultrasonic toothbrush effectiveness | SDF studies | Caries and breastfeeding

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

We continue our coverage of the 2018 American Association of Dental Research (AADR) meeting in Fort Lauderdale, FL, with a study on ultrasonic toothbrushes, two presentations on the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF), and research on early childhood caries and breastfeeding.

Patients often ask about the effectiveness of different toothbrushes. A pilot study presented at AADR found that ultrasonic toothbrushes appear to effectively remove plaque and boost gingival health. Learn more here.

One of the aesthetic drawbacks of SDF is the black staining left on teeth after its use. What if there were a way to lessen the impact of this staining? A March 22 presentation looked at the use of potassium iodide to do so. Does this work? Read more here.

Staying with SDF, we know that it has been shown to reduce the bond strength of composite to dentin, but does it have that same effect on resin-modified glass ionomer? Another AADR presentation reported on a study that tested the bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer to dentin after SDF use. What did the researchers discover? Learn more here.

When you are seeing new parents, especially mothers, do they ask if continuing to breastfeed puts their child at risk for caries? An AADR presentation addressed this question by studying whether children were at risk for early childhood caries if they continued to breastfeed after they began eating other dietary carbohydrates. The research can help you answer these patients' questions. Read more here.

Next week we'll have more coverage from AADR, including CAD/CAM and other practical clinical research.
