Week in Review: Oral health in postmenopausal and pregnant women; plus a new legal case

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Are postmenopausal women with periodontitis or edentulism at a greater risk of heart disease and death? A new study from the Journal of the American Heart Association looked at the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in this population, with the results suggesting that improving oral health could lengthen life. Learn more here.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sheri Doniger also addresses this study in her latest column, using it to illustrate her conversations with patients about the effectiveness of flossing and how effective oral healthcare interventions are portrayed in the mainstream media. Read more here.

Also this week on DrBicuspid.com, our popular Legal Cases series from William S. Spiegel and Dr. Marc R. Leffler returns. They report on what happened to a new-to-practice prosthodontist who placed implants in a 68-year-old patient who didn't mention an important health fact during pretreatment conversations or on her health history form. Learn more here.

Finally, what accounts for the increased risk of gingival bleeding and tooth decay during pregnancy? Are there differences in oral health habits between pregnant and nonpregnant women, and when do they occur? Research presented at the 2017 International Association for Dental Research annual meeting explored these issues. Read more here.
