Wisconsin will provide financial support to the Marquette University School of Dentistry (MUSOD) to help establish a $28 million special needs dental clinic.
The state’s only dental school wants to upgrade its clinical facilities to treat up to 500 patients with special needs, representing a more than 65% increase in the number of special needs patients now being treated at MUSOD, according to the university. Furthermore, Marquette will seek private donations and other nonstate resources to fund the majority (62%) of the project.
Currently, the school’s clinics serve nearly 30,000 patients and are one of Wisconsin’s largest dental Medicaid providers. The dental school receives approximately $2.4 million annually from the state to provide clinical care for underserved populations and, in return, provides over $16 million in oral healthcare services in its Milwaukee clinics alone.
