Marilyn Tavenner, the administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), has announced her resignation, according to multiple media reports. February will be her last month as the CMS administrator.
At press time, no official statement of Tavenner's resignation was on the CMS website.
Tavenner was appointed in February 2010, a few weeks before President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). She was at the center of the problem-plagued rollout of the federal insurance marketplace in October 2013.
Before becoming administrator, Tavenner was a senior official at the CMS, which insures 1 in 3 Americans and has an annual budget of more than $800 billion. Tavenner, a nurse by training, also worked at the Hospital Corporation of America, a commercial hospital chain. From 2006 to 2010, she managed Medicaid and other programs in Virginia.
She called the health insurance marketplace a success, noting that 27 states are expanding eligibility for Medicaid, as Congress intended in the ACA.
