Delta Dental of Virginia has notified members that it experienced a recent data security incident that may have affected the personal information, including Social Security numbers and health data, of about 146,000 people, according to a Delta Dental press release dated November 21.

On or around April 23, 2025, Delta Dental discovered suspicious activity associated with an email account, which triggered an immediate investigation. Delta Dental of Virginia engaged independent cybersecurity experts to assist with the process, according to the press release.

The investigation revealed that specific emails and attachments may have been accessed and acquired without authorization between March 21, 2025, and April 23, 2025. A thorough review revealed that some members’ personal data, including names, Social Security numbers, state- or U.S. government-issued ID numbers, and protected health information, may have been exposed. However, Delta Dental has no proof that the potentially affected data were misused, according to the press release.

As soon as the data breach was discovered, Delta Dental claimed it implemented measures to enhance security and minimize the risk of a similar incident occurring in the future.
