Report: Consumers spent $30 a month for dental insurance in 2012

Consumers paid an average of $30 per month for dental insurance in 2012, according to a new report by healthcare insurance exchange eHealth.

The "Costs of Supplemental Insurance Products Report" outlines the average costs of individual dental, vision, accident, and travel health insurance plans available in the U.S. on the eHealthInsurance.com website.

An analysis of more than 25,000 policies for dental insurance that were sold through eHealth in 2012 showed that individuals (regardless of age group) paid an average of $30 per month for a dental insurance policy. Among HMO dental insurance plans, the average premium was $20 per month. Among PPO dental plans, the average premium was $34 per month. Altogether, 34% of PPO plans had coinsurance and the average coinsurance rate per plan was 10%.

Adults ages 35 to 44 paid the most for general dental insurance with premiums averaging $37 per month, while adults ages 18 to 24 saw the lowest premiums at $22 per month, according to eHealth.

The eHealth report also analyzed the cost of individual dental insurance plans purchased on a state-by-state basis. New Jersey had the highest average monthly dental insurance premiums at $38.38, and New Mexico had the lowest at $21.28.
