Dos and don'ts for insurance

Help patients get the most from their insurance

Do

Send insurance companies "stories" about exceptional treatment. Typically, insurance companies handle numerous claims as quickly as they can. If they see a claim that does not fit neatly into a "covered" category, they are likely to simply reject it. When submitting a claim for complex or unusual treatment, help them give due consideration to it by writing a brief, simple narrative explaining what was done and why you believe it should be covered. It can't hurt, and may win their approval.

Don

Don't make patients fend for themselves. Many patients get confused and frustrated by the behavior of insurance companies. Be their ally. Volunteer to help them in their dealings with insurers. You may not change the outcome, but you will earn patient loyalty.
