New diagnostic dental codes proposed; vitamin D helps battle caries

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Since 2009, an international academic work group has been developing and testing a new coding scheme for dental diagnostics they say greatly simplifies the coding process when compared to other systems already in the works.

Members of the group convened last week at Harvard School of Dental Medicine to discuss the successes and challenges of implementing EZCodes Dental Diagnostic Terminology, which is being piloted in 17 dental schools and institutions in the U.S. and Europe. Click here to read more, including comments from those who have used both EZCodes and SNODENT.

In other Practice Management Community news, a new report from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality analyzed data from hospital emergency room visits in 29 states and found patterns familiar to dentistry: Young people, the uninsured and Medicaid participants, the poor, and those in rural areas are most likely to seek dental services in this manner, further evidence of the nation's critical access-to-care issues.

Finally, over in the Restoratives Community, few would dispute vitamin D's role in supporting bone health, yet for years researchers have disagreed about its effect on dental. Now a new meta-analysis finds decades of evidence that vitamin D can play a role in lowering rates of dental caries, especially among children.
