U.S. dental coverage increased 4.5% in 2010

More than 175 million people in the U.S. -- 57% of the population -- were covered by some form of dental benefits in 2010, according to a new report.

The recently released 2011 National Association of Dental Plans (NADP)/Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA) Joint Dental Benefits Enrollment Report indicates a 4.5% increase in total national enrollment compared with the decline in 2009.

Additional highlights from the report:

  • Dental preferred provider organization (DPPO) products remain the most prevalent product in the market, increasing market share to 74% of all commercial benefits.
  • Individual products increased to 3.6% of the population with dental benefits.
  • Only 1% of dental benefits are integrated with medical policies, while 98% are provided under a separate dental policy.

The report includes both national and state data. Dental plan members receive the report as part of their membership, and it is offered at a reduced rate to all other membership categories.
