The Puerto Rico College of Dental Surgeons (the Colegio) has filed a $150 million class-action lawsuit against most of the country's insurance companies, according to an ADA News story.
The complaint alleges that insurance companies are limiting or denying payment for necessary services and that services were downcoded or bundled, the story stated.
Colegio President Thomas Medina accused the insurance companies of interfering with doctor/patient relationships. The majority of Puerto Ricans have insurance so dentists have to wait to be paid by the insurance companies, he said.
The lawsuit was filed in state court in February 2009 and is now pending in federal court.
The Puerto Rican government does not oversee insurance companies.
