Start as early as possible. If you don't have a financial plan, you need to have one done, preferably performed by a certified financial planner who specializes in working with dental professionals. If you already have one, you need to update it throughout your career because a plan that was created when you were 32 may not work for you when you're 42 or 52.

Don't wait until you're ready to retire. Financial planning is something that many dentists will put off until they're almost at their expected retirement age. If you don't plan properly or at all, you will most likely have to work years longer than expected. Plan now so you can retire when and how you want to.
