Indiana has become the latest state to eliminate Medicaid adult dental benefits in an effort to overcome a budget crisis.
Under Gov. Mitch Daniels' two-year, $27.6 billion budget proposal, Medicaid services -- including dentistry, podiatry, and hearing aids -- would be eliminated for adults. The proposal could save the state about $17 million annually, according to a story in the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Indiana already cut $4 million from its Medicaid dental and vision benefits for adults, which took effect January 1.
The proposed budget was presented January 13 to the State Budget Committee, which accepted it by a 3-2 vote. It now moves on to the House Ways and Means Committee, where it will be formally introduced as a bill, debated, and likely amended, according to the Courier-Journal.
