Economy dampens National Dentex's 2009 sales

Citing the weak global market, National Dentex reported sales of $161 million for fiscal 2009 (end-December 31), down 6.1% from sales of $171.6 million in 2008. Net income for 2009 rose to $5.8 million, compared to a net loss of $877,000 in the previous fiscal year.

Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2009 fell 7.5% on sales of $38.1 million, compared to the final quarter of 2008, which saw sales of $41.2 million. Net income for the quarter was $429,000, compared to a net loss of $5.2 million for the final quarter of 2008.

"As a result of a very difficult consumer market, 2009 has been a challenging year for the dental laboratory industry," said CEO David Brown in a press release. "While we are beginning to see improving trends, we continue to feel the effects of the industrywide slowdown in revenues brought on by a decline in discretionary consumer spending. In response, we have made great strides in controlling our production and operating costs, in particular our labor and related payroll expenses. As a result, we have improved profitability in 2009."
