United Concordia wins $660M DOD contract

United Concordia has been awarded a $660 million, five-year Active Duty Dental Program (ADDP) contract by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

United Concordia will administer dental benefits for active duty service members (ADSMs) referred by military Dental Treatment Facilities (DTFs) to the civilian dental community and those who reside more than 50 miles from a military DTF, according to the company.

"United Concordia will provide ADSMs care through its dental network of over 50,000 general dentists and 9,500 specialists across the country," the company stated. "To support the unique needs of the ADDP, United Concordia will perform case management through an innovative referral and authorization process -- a first in dental."

Also, the company will assist ADSMs in obtaining dental appointments online or via a live representative, track dental readiness of ADSMs, and ensure the government has access to numerous, individually produced reports on a 24/7 basis.

The contract will begin August 1, 2009, and is expected to serve more than 100,000 ADSMs annually, according to United Concordia.

This is the company's second major DOD contract. Since 1996, it has administered dental benefits for the Department of Defense's TRICARE Dental Program, which includes family members of active duty uniformed services personnel and National Guard and Reserve members and their families.
