The Pennsylvania Senate has approved legislation that would require dentists to carry malpractice insurance, according to a news story on ABC27.
A licensed and practicing dentist would be required to "maintain medical professional liability insurance in the minimum amount of $1 million per occurrence or claim and $3 million per annual aggregate," according to SB 388.
Also, an applicant for licensure or license renewal would be required to show proof of insurance to the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry; failure to do so would result in their license being refused, revoked, or suspended.
"This legislation will ensure that those injured by a dentist can pay for corrective care and be compensated for any pain or suffering they faced," said Sen. Pat Vance (R-Cumberland/York), in a news release. "I'm hopeful this bill will move quickly through the House and be signed by the governor."
The bill has now been referred to the House Insurance Committee for consideration, the story concluded.
