Dear DrBicuspid Member,
Before I get into the news, I want to bring your attention to a webinar sponsored by Carestream Dental happening next Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m. ET. Prosthodontist Dr. Andrew C. Johnson will share the tools his practice can't live without. Sign up now to attend the live online seminar or receive a recording.
Top story of the week
In a webinar, leaders from the ADA and the Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO) signaled a shift toward collaboration for the two powerful dental organizations, saying that they'll use their combined strengths to meet myriad challenges facing dentistry. Our top story of the week covered the highlights, including the organizations' shared priorities and what's next for dentistry.
If you're interested in this news, be sure to check out our interview with ADSO Executive Director Andrew Smith on navigating staffing shortages and inflation, which was recorded at SmileCon. Also at SmileCon, Lynn Atkinson, RDH, showed us her favorite dental hygiene products that she uses for herself and her patients.
Tricks and treats for Halloween
With Halloween just around the corner, there's a new hashtag going viral on TikTok that may give dental professionals quite a fright. A search of #DIYdentistry on TikTok reveals various tricks to care for teeth without visiting a dentist, including repairing teeth using kits bought on Amazon. Needless to say, dental professionals are discouraging the trend.
Also, no Halloween is complete without candy, but what's the healthiest way to indulge in sweet treats? According to a series of new articles, many health professionals and dentists are recommending eating more candy on Halloween rather than spacing out sweets over time.
Antiseptic resistance
We've written quite a bit about antibiotic resistance, but new research highlights the issue of bacterial resistance to antiseptics. A review showed that common oral germs, including Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, may show resistance to antiseptics like chlorhexidine -- and that resistance may increase over time.
Cuspies Awards nominations
Last but not least, it's the most wonderful time of the year! No, I'm not talking about the fall and winter holidays. I'm talking about the Cuspies Awards, the annual awards program that celebrates the best and brightest in dentistry.
Every year, you loyal DrBicuspid.com readers have the opportunity to nominate outstanding people, products, and events. Now through next Sunday, November 6, tell us whom you want to see take home a fabulous trophy at the 2023 Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting.
