A dental office manager in Canada who took about $420,000 from her employer to fund family vacations, gambling, her children's education, and more was sentenced to two years in prison, according to news reports.
Jennifer Leslie, 37, a mother of two, was sentenced on November 4 in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines and also received three years of probation. Earlier this year, Leslie pleaded guilty to the charge of committing fraud over $5,000.
Leslie's employer was not identified, but the court was told that she worked at dental offices in Fort Erie and Ridgeway.
In 2013, Leslie began making hundreds of unauthorized transactions and poured more than $420,000 into her personal bank accounts, according to reports. She used the stolen money to invest in her children's education, buy a vehicle, pay for family trips, and gamble.
The dentist, who wrote in a statement that was read in court that he treated Leslie like family, said he had to liquidate hundreds of thousands of dollars in investments to deal with the losses.
