Survey stirs dental therapist debate; racial disparity in oral cancer referrals?

The debate over whether dental therapists are a necessary and safe addition to the dental team heated up again this week after the W.K. Kellogg Foundation claimed a new survey shows the majority of Americans support the idea of dental therapists as an alternative source of treatment for people who can't afford dental care.

Meanwhile, race appears to play a role in oral cancer surgery referrals, according to a study in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. While the researchers weren't surprised to find racial discrimination in cancer treatment, they said they didn't expect it to be "so prevalent."
