The debate over whether dental therapists are a necessary and safe addition to the dental team heated up again this week after the W.K. Kellogg Foundation claimed a new survey shows the majority of Americans support the idea of dental therapists as an alternative source of treatment for people who can't afford dental care.

Meanwhile, race appears to play a role in oral cancer surgery referrals, according to a study in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. While the researchers weren't surprised to find racial discrimination in cancer treatment, they said they didn't expect it to be "so prevalent." Finally, in Restoratives Community news, the parents of a 13-year-old Maryland girl have filed a lawsuit against Nestlé USA, Nestlé Waters North America, and Gerber, claiming that the companies' fluoride-containing products are responsible for the girl's fluorosis and related dental issues.
