Oral cancer screenings questioned; dental students help the homeless

Dental care is one of the greatest unmet needs of the 3.5 million homeless in the U.S. because they are often seen as troublesome and undesirable patients.

But dental students who treated homeless patients at a Los Angeles skid row clinic came away with improved attitudes and a greater sense of duty to help the needy, according to a study in the Journal of Dental Education. Read more in our latest Practice Management Community feature.

In clinical news, some surprising findings from a recent Cochrane review: The scientific literature does not conclusively prove that routine visual screening for oral cancer increases detection and prevention. Even so, the review authors believe that routine screening can be effective, and experts say it is still warranted. Read more.
