A Charleston, WV, dentist is being sued by a patient who claims he did not properly address lesions in her mouth that later turned into cancer, according to a news story in the West Virginia Record.
The patient, Janet Williams, claims she went to Mark Simpson, D.D.S., in April 2004 because of a chronic lesion in her mouth, according to the story. After a biopsy determined that the lesion was benign, Dr. Simpson did not order any follow-up care.
But Williams said she continued suffering from the lesions, and in 2007 she was diagnosed with oral cancer. She blames Dr. Simpson for not warning her that the lesions could develop into cancer.
"Williams claims she has had to have part of her face surgically removed because of the cancer and has incurred about $1 million in medical bills," according to the story.
