November is American Diabetes Month, and two doctors have tips to help your dental patients stay health.
Saleh Aldasouqi, MD, and Susan Maples, DDS, collaborated on a study called "Diabetes Detection in the Dental Office," which was presented at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) annual meeting in May. In the study, the two doctors found that it is possible to help diagnose patients with diabetes and prediabetes in the dental office because of the connection between periodontitis and blood sugar control.
To help dentists celebrate American Diabetes Month and also help keep their patients healthy, Drs. Aldasouqi and Maples have five tips for patients to keep their diabetes and oral health in check:
- Get screened for diabetes.
- Treat periodontal disease.
- Eat a low-sugar, high-fiber diet.
- Exercise.
- Work with a physician and a dentist.
