More people are buying individual health insurance because they are losing jobs that came with health benefits, and some are picking up dental insurance as well, according to an article on Bloomberg.com.
At Humana, the number of customers buying individual insurance grew 17% in the past year, from 295,000 in June 2008 to 345,000 in June 2009, making these plans the fastest-growing sector of the company's business, the news service reported.
In April, Humana began offering short-term insurance for unemployed or part-time workers, and in May it added individual dental and vision options, according to Bloomberg.
Golden Rule Insurance, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, started offering dental and vision plans in the past 12 months and added two temporary plans in June, "for consumers whose lives are in a time of transition," according to the article.
