Planmeca is expanding its product range with the Planmeca 4D Jaw Motion system, which offers visualization and measurement data of mandibular 3D movements in real-time. The system will be available as an option for the Planmeca ProMax 3D Mid and Max x-ray units.
Planmeca 4D Jaw Motion is an integrated system for tracking, recording, visualizing, and analyzing mandibular movement in 3D. The system tracks and visualizes jaw movements with the Planmeca ProFace camera feature of the ProMax 3D Mid and Max x-ray units, showing the movements in real-time in a 3D cone-beam CT (CBCT) image. No additional hardware is required. Captured 3D visualizations are displayed in the Planmeca Romexis imaging software, allowing immediate diagnostics. All data can also be recorded for later use and analysis.
The system makes it possible to measure and record the movement path of one or more points of interest in a 3D image. For occlusion analysis, digital dental models can be aligned with a CBCT image. All movement and measurement information can be exported to third-party software in an XML or CSV format for analysis and treatment planning.
Planmeca 4D Jaw Motion can be used for temporomandibular disorder (TMD) diagnostics, mandibular movement analysis, and articulator programming, as well as preoperative planning and postoperative treatment verification, according to the company.
"Planmeca 4D Jaw Motion provides users with extremely valuable quantitative data regarding lower jaw movement, as well as other information unattainable with a static 3D image," stated Helianna Puhlin-Nurminen, vice president of the Digital Imaging and Applications division at Planmeca, in a press release.
