Sirona Q1 sales jump $35 million

Strong CAD/CAM and Imaging sales -- particularly the Cerec AC and Galileos -- helped Sirona Dental Systems reach revenues of $215 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2010 (end-December 31), a 19.5% jump over revenues of $179.7 million in the first quarter of 2009.

Net income for the quarter was $31.2 million, compared to $5.6 million for the same quarter a year ago.

Year-over-year, CAD/CAM sales increased 37.5%, Instruments increased 19%, Imaging Systems increased 9.2%, and Treatment Centers increased 12.2%. Revenues in the U.S. increased 12.1%, driven by the CAD/CAM and Imaging segments, while revenues outside the U.S. increased by 23.3%, driven by strength in Germany, Australia, Canada, and Japan, the company stated.

In the CAD/CAM segment, the lion's share of the Q1 revenue increase came from new system sales, not upgrades, Chairman, President, and CEO Jost Fischer said in a conference call. The company now claims an installed base of 27,000 Cerec systems, he noted. The average sales price of the Cerec has risen slightly, he added, to about $129,000.
